About the Project
The city of Sofia is one of the greenest capitals in Europe. In the spirit of amplifying and celebrating the existing strengths of the city, the concept of an urban forest was born. The frameworks for where this concept is applied, and how, form the basis of the strategy behind the entire city's concept. Upon this, densification and transport networks are layered to create a vibrant and integrated city plan. The masterplan addresses several key issues of widespread building vacancy, uncontrolled urban sprawl, heavy car dependency, poor air quality, inadequate transport, a failing water system, and a decreasing population. The masterplan follows a phased strategy, starting in 2024 with land protection and tree planting, advancing to transit and cycling infrastructure by 2035, reaching full green network maturity with agroforestry and carbon capture by 2050, and culminating in targeted densification aligned with local typologies by 2080, shaping Sofia into a greener, inclusive, and future-ready capital.
